Stem Cells

After reading through quite a lot of materials, I think stem cells are a miracle of nature. So what is a stem cell? They are cells found in all multi cellular organisms and are characterized by the ability to renew themselves. What is amazing is that they act as a repair system for the body, replenishing specialized cells, but also maintain the normal turnover of regenerative organs, such as blood, skin, or intestinal tissues.
Stem cells have enormous potential in health and medical research but to fully harness this potential, scientists are studying how stem cells transform, or differentiate, into the diverse range of specialised cells that make humans what they are today. They can be used to treat victims with burnt skins, Parkinson's disease, Cardiovascular diseases etc. The stem cells treatment has also helped blind patients to regain their eyesight.
Researchers at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London treated the patients as part of a clinical trial on patients who have lost their sight from chemical accidents or a rare genetic disease.Dr Julie Daniels, who is leading the research team, will present the results at a conference on regenerative medicine being held in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, today. She said: "Before the surgery the patients were barely able to recognise when someone was waving a hand in front of their face but we have restored their vision to the point they can read three to four lines down the eye chart." Nineteen patients have now received the treatment, known as limbal stem cell therapy, at Moorfields Eye Hospital and have recovered. This is a very significant breakthrough in science and can help many people. Scientists also predicts that major body organs can be made in the near future.
